Kratovo

Kratovo is built in and around the rim of an extinct volcanic crater in the Northeast Region, giving it one of the most distinctive settings of any town in North Macedonia. It was historically an important mining center for gold and silver, and that wealth funded the stone defensive towers (kuli) and old stone bridges that still define its skyline today. The combination of volcanic geology and medieval stonework makes Kratovo unlike anywhere else in the country.
