~600m
Kratovo
Kratovo is one of Macedonia's most atmospheric medieval towns, and arguably its most photogenic under snow. Ancient towers, stone bridges and cobblestone lanes create a unique winter setting — ideal for a quiet weekend escape away from the ski crowds.
Budget skiing in the heart of the Balkans
North Macedonia is one of Europe's most cost-effective winter destinations. Lift passes cost a fraction of Alpine prices, accommodation is affordable, and the mountains reliably receive snow from December through March. For skiers priced out of the Alps or Dolomites, Macedonia represents genuine value.
Mavrovo, Popova Šapka and Pelister are the three main ski areas — each with its own character. Mavrovo is the largest and most developed, Popova Šapka sits at the highest altitude with the most reliable snow, and Pelister pairs skiing with easy access to Bitola, one of the country's most elegant historical cities.
If skiing isn't your thing, Kratovo under snow is one of the most visually striking sights in the country — medieval towers and stone bridges set against a white winter panorama that few tourists ever find.
