MEDIEVAL TOWN · WINTER DESTINATION
Kratovo in Winter
ABOUT KRATOVO
Medieval Macedonia, under snow
Kratovo is one of the best-preserved medieval towns on the Balkan Peninsula — and arguably its most striking under winter snow. Built inside a natural volcanic crater, six medieval defensive towers and five stone bridges still stand, connecting quarters across ravines and terraces.
In winter, when tourists are practically absent, Kratovo takes on a quieter beauty. Snow covers the cobblestone lanes and rooftops, bridges and towers reflect in partially frozen streams below. A destination for those seeking something genuinely different.
Kratovo is just 1.5 hours from Skopje by car or bus — ideal for a day trip or a quiet weekend. Several small guesthouses and family-run accommodation are available in town.
